Exit Interview: Jeff Hawkins, inventor of the PalmPilot (continued)

DG: There's the burger-circuitÉwhere you go out for a burger and just chat.

JH: Yeah, but you know, I might go to some planning meetings. Whatever they think. I've made myself available if they wanted to use me. But we haven't formalized that yet. This is not an acrimonious departure. We feel very loyal to Palm and we want to make sure Palm is successful.

DG: What will Donna's role be for the next few months?

JH: She runs the business side of things, I do the product side of things. And she will be the CEO of the company. I think for the next couple of months we're going to be doing some basic business planning and figuring out our strategy and arranging financing and getting offices and hiring people. Just sort of the standard things you do. I'll take care of the logistics of getting products going, and she'll take care of the logistics of getting a business going. Including an office and phones and all that kind of stuff. It's a lot of work.

DG: Been there, done that, know what needs to be done.

JH: We'll see if it's as fun the second time around.

DG: Let me know. It's something I need to find out. In terms of starting a new company, sometimes you're at the point whereÉat least for the entrepreneurs I know, sometimes it's "I'm going to go build something new" or "I know what I'm going to build so let's make it happen."

JH: Not quite, I have some ideas. My innovation process that I do to innovate and think of new products is not on where you get this epiphany and you wake up the next day and think, "That was a great idea, now I know what to do" But sometimes you have some ideas and you mull them around in your head and you try them out and experiment with them and I'm in that stage. I've got some ideas. I've got some concepts I want to work with. But it'll take a few months to flesh them out.

DG: Are there things you want to share with our readers?

JH: I want to make sure people don't misinterpret this. You know, I believe that what we're doing is possibly one of the best things that's going to happen in the Palm platform in a long time. That's a forward looking statement of course. But I hope to make that ÉI think this is going to be great for the platform, we hope to make some really great products that are complimentary to the products that Palm and other licensees are making. I don't want anyone to misconstrue that we are tired or have given up or are bailing out or anything like that. It's more likeÉhey we have done some really exciting stuff. We think the momentum is behind the Palm platform. We think it's got a great developer community and we see opportunities. I don't want anyone to think the slightest negative about this. I think it's a very positive thing. A year from now hopefully I'll be able to convince you of that.

DG: Given your track record, you probably can anyway. Obviously you're going to be hearing a lot of "Okay, now do it again," kind of stuff. Which is a challenge.

JH: We are not trying to recreate Palm. It's different. It's something different but I think it'll be exciting for the platform.
