Franklin Covey knows what matters most (continued)

For example, in the Roles application, I was asked to list the various roles I play in life, such as husband, brother, writer, employee, etc. I then had to specify the key person I affect when I operate in that role. In order to clarify how I can really shine in that role, I then created a Tribute Statement, made up of the kinds of things I'd like that person to say about me. In Figure C you can see the Roles Palm application in use.

FIGURE C

I'm only beginning this process, so I set my expectations low.

To facilitate our discovery phase, those of us in attendance at the workshop were given a 3x5 card on which we were to complete the sentence, "If time and money were not a factor, I would…" By answering this deceptively simple sentence, you draw out what matters most for you. Putting considerations of time and money aside, the essence of your desire rises to the surface.

After some soul searching, my answer became clear. I wrote, "If time and money were not a factor, I would write, direct, and star in a feature film, possibly a remake of The Legend of Billie Jean." When I sifted through all the daily urgencies and distractions, my one true dream came into focus. What I really want to do, more than anything, is produce a modern update of the 1985 film about a girl who stands up for what she believes in, unwittingly positioning herself as a cult hero. When the film originally debuted, the issues it raised were ahead of their time. Only now is society ready to face up to the hard questions the film poses regarding what's "fair."

Having discovered my inner passion, I was ready to move on to the second phase.

Plan
In order to make your dream come true, you've got to start by establishing goals. In my case, I have one big, long-range goal: to film a remake of The Legend of Billie Jean. However, it's necessary to establish smaller goals that act as stepping-stones on your path to personal fulfillment. This is where the Franklin Planner can come in really handy to help you establish your goals and organize your life around your priorities. In short, you must establish a schedule based on your long-range goals.

Everyone is most likely familiar with the Palm To Do list. Maybe you've tried using it to keep track of your action items. However, the To Do list can often leave you stymied as it continues on ad infinitum. It's easy to get overwhelmed when your list of action items grows to enormous proportions. The Franklin Planner offers a helpful alternative called the Daily Task List. It works much like the To Do list, with three major differences.

Daily Task List
First, the Daily Task List is divided by days, much like a Date Book entry. This helps to narrow the scope of the items you need to do. Secondly, the items can be prioritized on a two-tier framework. You start by prioritizing by value. This is done by adding a letter designation to the action item, A, B, or C. An A means the item is Vital and must be completed that day. The letter B designates the item as Important, and a C means it's optional. Once the items are prioritized by value, they can be listed in the order you want to complete them by numbering them 1, 2, 3, 4, etc.
