WIRED TO VOTE
By Steve Niles
If you haven't yet registered to vote, you'd better get on the ball. You've only got until October 10 if you want to stand a chance of being registered in time to vote on November 7. Fortunately, there are a number of sites online where you can register, so there's no excuse not to do it.
To register in a hurry (and by "in a hurry," I mean right now), you could pay a visit to http://www.election.com, otherwise known as Democracy, the Upgrade. The Global Election Company has this as their rousing motto:
Election.com is committed to making democracy work better. Our vision-to enable greater participation by giving voters more choices in how they vote. All online.
You could also try http://www.ivillage.com/election/. Not only can you register there, but the site can also help you figure out whom to vote for, thanks to their Candidate Match-O-Matic. Now choosing a president is as easy as subscribing to a dating service. You just fill out a quick online survey, and then iVillage.com matches you up with your most compatible candidate.
The MTV generation might be more interested in registering to vote at http://www.rockthevote.org. The site can also keep you up-to-date on which popular musicians are currently engaged in rocking the vote, whatever that might mean.
Finally, you can register at either of the two major candidate's official Web sites. For George W Bush's site, visit http://www.georgewbush.com, and for Al Gore's site, visit http://www.algore.com.
Whichever site you choose, just be sure to do it fast. Your time is running out to register, and it's extremely important that you do. Even if your excuse so far has been that neither candidate appeals to you, remember there are a whole host of other candidates to choose from. There's Pat Buchanan with the Reform Party, Ralph Nader with the Green Party, Harry Browne with the Libertarian Party, John Hagelin with the Natural Law Party, David McReynolds with the Socialist Party, and Howard Phillips with the Constitution Party. Heck, pencil yourself in if you want to. Granted, voting for any of these people would mean virtually nothing, but their families are watching. Even a single extra vote would mean a lot to their self-esteem.
There's one more great reason to register to vote. If you register to vote because of this article, online or otherwise, we want you to let us know. Just post your announcement on the PowerBoards by following the link at the bottom of the page. We'll then select one lucky contributor to receive a free ZATZ mug! Now how's that for incentive?
