PALMPOWER SITE OF THE MONTH
Valuable resources for new Palm device users
By Steve Niles
Palm devices were a hot gift item this past holiday season. Lots of brand new users are finding their way to the pages of PalmPower. If you're one of them, let me tell you that each month we select one Palm device-related Web site as our Site of the Month. To earn this title, a site must demonstrate a new or creative use for Palm devices or offer a valuable service or important information. January's Site of the Month was chosen for its particular value to all you new users out there.
The site is called NearlyMobile, and it's found at http://www.nearlymobile.com. A division of Mobile Generation, Inc. (at http://www.mobilegeneration.com), NearlyMobile is "dedicated to providing an easy-to-use site dedicated to providing information relevant to new Palm users." It sounds like they're very dedicated. The site is pictured in Figure A.

NearlyMobile has five sections that will help you get started in the exciting world of Palm computing. In the section, "The Basics of Palm," NearlyMobile explains the differences between the various Palm devices on the market, how to determine the amount of memory you need, and the standard software that comes built-in on each Palm device. It also talks about what the Palm OS is and what other devices use it. Finally, the section covers two other important features of your new Palm device: HotSync and Grafitti.
The next section provides an easy-to-follow five-step installation guide. It also tells you how to delete an application when you're ready to get rid of it.
NearlyMobile also provides a number of hints, tips, and tricks that can help you use your Palm device more productively. In fact, we've been doing the same thing here at PalmPower for years. Be sure to visit our home page at http://www.palmpower.com where you can sign up to receive our free weekly tip mailing. Each week, a valuable new tip will arrive in your email inbox. And if you're interested in enterprise-related topics (how to integrate your Palm device into your professional world), or you just love getting free tips, visit our Enterprise Edition at http://www.palmpowerenterprise.com and sign up, as well.
If you're having difficulties with your Palm device, rest assured, someone else has already been through it. The folks at NearlyMobile have anticipated your questions and provided a section entitled, "Common New User Problems." Of course, they also offer some solutions.
The site isn't terribly elaborate, keeping true to its mission of being easy-to-use, but it has a lot of valuable information, even if it does have an unfortunate propensity for using the word "Newbie." If you're new to Palm computing, welcome. Please continue to enjoy PalmPower Magazine and be sure to pay a visit to NearlyMobile.com.
