Using custom fields to assign multiple categories to Address Book entries (continued)

One other note: avoid making one abbreviation tag a shorter version of another. For example, if you use "&re" for real estate and "&ret" for retired, when you search for "&re" you'll also get all the entries tagged with "&ret." If you need both of these associations, you could use &re for real estate and &rt for retired.

So what should you use the original 15 categories for? You can use them for major categories such as Business, Entertainment, Medical, Personal, Relatives, Restaurants, and Travel, for example. Your new associations tags can cross any of these category boundaries. So if you have a Personal friend who is also a doctor, you can now place her in the Personal category but tag her with &md for the doctor association too. You can now have the best of both worlds.
