What's the deal with LAVA lamps?
In 1963, Edward Craven Walker, an engineer, designed the first motion lamp. Walker called his invention the Astro Lamp. By mixing a bit of this and a bit of that, he discovered a hypnotic light, which has made LAVA-brand motion lamps a piece of Americana. Two American entrepreneurs brought the Astro Lamp to the USA after seeing the lamp at a German trade show in 1965. They bought the rights to manufacture the lamp in North America, and renamed it the LAVA-brand motion lamp. The LAVA lamp became a cultural icon of the 1960s and 70s. There's still only one manufacturer of the LAVA lamp, Haggerty Enterprises (at http://www.lavaworld.com).
