LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Wanted: a few good programmers and a digital camera
This month in Letters to the Editor, two readers write in with questions about discontinued products. There's also a call for a good Palm OS programmer.

PalmPix discontinued
I thought it would be important news for PalmPower readers to hear this. While visiting the U.S., I was planning on buying the PalmPix digital camera for the Palm m505, but I couldn't find it online or in any store. After being misled by Kodak--they said that they don't sell it on their site but I can find it on their business partners' sites--I contacted their support, and they finally admitted the product is discontinued.

There are some interesting questions about this event:

  • How come Kodak stops what seems to be the best cost effective solution for midrange quality--the combination of the 64MB SD card and the 800x600 picture taking?

  • Was the product defective or was it cannibalizing other Kodak imaging products?

I've been a PalmPower subscriber for quite a while. I've used the PalmPix for the Palm IIIc, and I found it to be a very comfortable solution due to its size. It was also useful at unexpected family events. I must say that you, as the editor, should present these questions to Kodak and publish whatever you can come out with.

If you have any information about the above questions, please contact me.

Best regards,
Haggai

Oh, DietLog, where art thou?
I wrote a review of DietLog way back when you folks were getting started. I recently tried to get in touch with them about licensing the product and could not find them. Are they still around?

I'm also looking for a Palm OS programmer or a company that's very good at Palm OS programming. Any thoughts?

Editor-in-Chief David Gewirtz responds
DietLog was acquired by Healthetech (at http://www.healthetech.com) and has been subsequently discontinued, according to a note on their Web site, though they offer a new product called BalanceLog which we'd like to review at some point in the future.

As for Palm OS programmers, there are a whole bunch of excellent programmers out there. It really depends on what you're looking for. We'll include you in our letters to the editor this month and perhaps a reader will pop up and volunteer.
