PALMPOWER SITE OF THE MONTH
Make a good first impression with your own customized logo
By Steve Niles

They say you never get a second chance to make a good first impression. Well, now your Palm handheld can make a first impression on you every time you turn it on.

April's PalmPower Site of the Month is First Impressions (at http://www.fi.szn.cc), a Web site that offers a number of free logos that will display at start-up every time you turn on your handheld. The site is pictured in Figure A.

Customize your handheld with a First Impression logo. Roll over picture for a larger image.

You can download any logo in their gallery completely for free. If you don't like any of those options, create a custom logo, also for free.

An example logo is shown in Figure B.

FIGURE B

Your handheld could welcome you with a logo like this one.

The start-up logos are full-screen pictures that show up for just a second or two when you turn your Palm handheld. First Impressions even suggests you include your contact information in the logo display. That way, if your handheld gets lost, whoever finds it won't have to dig around to find your name and number.

The First Impression logos require X-Master to function. X-Master (at http://linkesoft.com/english/xmaster/) is a free application that manages Palm OS system extensions (otherwise known as Hacks).

If you decide to try a logo from First Impressions, keep in mind that when you perform a HotSync operation, you'll have to hold the HotSync button until the logo goes away. There's also a bug for owners of the Handspring Visor Deluxe. If you try to perform a HotSync operation while the unit is tuned off, a fatal error will occur. You'll have to perform a soft reset. To get around this, make sure your handheld is turned on before performing a HotSync operation.

That being said, having a logo pop up at start-up can be a fun way to set your handheld apart from the crowd. They're free, so check them out at http://www.fi.szn.cc.

Do you run a special site, one that provides a great resource for Palm device users? If so, your site may be eligible for consideration as the PalmPower Site of the Month. If chosen, you'll even be entitled to display the snazzy banner shown in Figure C.
