GOING NATIVE
Fredlet's (dream) summer vacation
By S. Fred Green a.k.a. Fredlet
The words "summer vacation" always conjure up sand and shorts and hazy days seen through sunglasses…although, now I don't really get a summer vacation since I have this pesky job that gets in the way of my being a woman of leisure. (So if any of you see an advertisement for "woman of leisure" let me know!)
But, I digress.
So let's just go with the idea that I do get a summer vacation and I have decided that I will be traveling to the fabulous beaches of…umm...the new resort island of Fredletonia. Check out Fredletonia in Figure A.

Here's Fredletonia in all its glory. Roll over picture for a larger image.
In Fredletonia, the fabulous pink sands crunch beneath your toes. The deep blue sea roars in the distance. The strains of the live band lilt in the air to serenade me on the beach…the beeps of my Palm computer warm my heart as I play Froggy…I know, you were waiting for that, weren't you?
Anyone who knows me at all, knows that I am surgically attached to my Palm device. No way would I abandon it for a vacation at the beach. However, there will be preparatory steps involved in getting ready for my idyllic vacation…some of them to prepare the Palm device, and some things on the Palm device that can help me prepare for the trip.
HotSync First things first. I'm going to HotSync on my Mac with PalmBuddy, shown in Figure B (located at http://perso.wanadoo.fr/fpillet/) to make sure all my data is preserved in case unforeseeable nasty things happen to my Palm organizer.

Totally recreating your Palm computer's memory from scratch is no fun. Both PC and Mac users can use BackupBuddy, shown in Figure C (located at http://www.backupbuddy.com). It'll back up all the little databases that are associated with the applications, all my DOC files for my books, you know…everything.

Pack that hardware In Fredletonia, there are modem jacks all over the place for me to use. So, I'll need to pack my Palm modem, (check out http://www.palm.com) and phone cords into my Rhinoskin 2000 (available from http://www.rhinoskin.com) with my extra batteries and a spare stylus. If that's not enough, you can get a waterproof Palm bag from Aquapac, as shown in Figure D. Aquapac's located at http://www.aquapac.co.uk/pp.html.
